Trip to Sakushima

Map of our exploration of Sakushima.

In our one day trip, we were able to hike much of the island and enjoy the island's many views.
Keiko, Saeko, Miyoko, and I waiting at the dock for our ferry leaving from Ishiki, to Sakushima. It takes 25 minutes and costs 800 yen.
The streets of Nishi-cho look much as they did 100 years ago. There are no large hotels of development in the island.
A rest house on the beach south of Nishi-cho.
A women drying Hijiki seaweed in the sun.
A pile of 'tako tsubo' waiting to trap octopus
The island has two villages. The rest is forest with well kept hiking paths,
Warming in the Sun.
Hill lumps in the park. With daikon growing on top.
Dangerous cat. Some cats bite. Robin's image of a scentic spot is where a cat is warming itself.
Safety notice for where to go in case of a tsunami.
The causeway from the small island of shrines.
The General store in East Village. Looking much as it did 90 years ago when it opened for business

Of the many islands in Ise and Mikawa, Sakushima is my favorite. For dramatic rock and waves Kamijima, for nice hotels and fancy meals, Himakajima, but for enjoying a good hike, a private beach or a meal of Asari clams, Sakushima.

a poem by Saeko inspired while in the sculpture park.

Kouen ni daikon haeru Sakushima yo

(growing in the park, daikon radish

only in Sakushima)

Looking to the Southwest, one can see many of the islands that dot Mikawa Bay.
